Postgraduate Field Trip to Suffolk and Sizewell B (and C)

The students and staff with Sizewell B in the background

Students and staff on the MSc Infrastructure Planning and Sustainable Development and the MSc Environmental Impact Assessment and Management went on a field trip to Suffolk (on the East coast of the UK) recently. Thanks to Emma Wragg for the photos - click on the green links for more info...

The purpose of the field trip was to learn about the governance, planning and decision making associated with the development of the proposed Sizewell C Nuclear Power Station in Suffolk.  The field trip group stayed in Ipswich and had meetings with a number of key stakeholders involved in the development including EDF, the County Councils, Leiston Town Council and  local community groups including the Stop Sizewell C campaign group who oppose the development.  They also walked miles around Sizewell B, the proposed site for Sizewell C and the Minsmere RSBP Nature Reserve which sits next to the site for Sizewell C

The group also visited the Sizewell B Turbine Hall (no photos allowed). The Turbine Hall (which contains the 2 massive turbines which turn the steam produced by the nuclear reactor into electricity) was definitely a highlight of the tour.  Everyone had to 'hug a turbine' rotating at 3,000 rpm to feel the vibrations.
