The purpose of the field trip was to learn about the governance, planning and decision making associated with the development of the proposed Sizewell C Nuclear Power Station in Suffolk. The field trip group stayed in Ipswich and had meetings with a number of key stakeholders involved in the development including EDF, the County Councils, Leiston Town Council and local community groups including the Stop Sizewell C campaign group who oppose the development. They also walked miles around Sizewell B, the proposed site for Sizewell C and the Minsmere RSBP Nature Reserve which sits next to the site for Sizewell C.
The group also visited the Sizewell B Turbine Hall (no photos allowed). The Turbine Hall (which contains the 2 massive turbines which turn the steam produced by the nuclear reactor into electricity) was definitely a highlight of the tour. Everyone had to 'hug a turbine' rotating at 3,000 rpm to feel the vibrations.
